MY JIB PROJECT
For the past couple of years I've been working on building a camera jib. It's gone through several revisions, and finally I have something that works fairly well that I've used for commercials, conferences, concerts, and corporate production.
My jib takes its styling from a popular commercial jib. The arm is made up of five four-foot sections, and can be setup using a three or more sections. The tail is five feet long, and at full length it requires around 125 lbs of counterweight, depending on the camera used.
It is built mostly out of aluminium using a drill press and hack saw. I'd kill for a milling machine, band saw, and the skill to weld aluminum.
The first version used push-pull cables, the second had hydraulics, and this current one uses electric drive. It works quite well. The controls take some time to master, but it's possible to get some very nice smooth shots moving on all axis once you get the hang of it.
Though I am still tweaking things, I am quite pleased with how this has turned out, and I am very thankful to others that posted info and pics of their home built jibs online for inspiration, especially on homebuiltstabilizers.com. It's the best site on the net for this sort of thing.
